Song written for February Album Writing Month 2020
When I was doing the Advanced Diploma in Music at Victoria University in 2019, there was a singer in the Certificate IV class whom I was infatuated with. My 50/90 2019 song "Lost in a Dream" is also about her.
However, I realised not long after that not only did she already have a partner, but she suffered from very bad anxiety; this was affecting her attendance at uni. According to a couple of my uni mates, she would often cry during rehearsals or before performances (and afterwards, her eyes would be bloodshot from crying).
Eventually, her anxiety got so bad to the point where she didn't even come to her own performance and essentially failed the course.
Towards the end of the uni year, I felt like I was one of the few who believed in her whilst everyone else had given up. When she didn't come to her performance, I was devastated! These experiences led to me writing this song.
This song is named after her. I reckon it's one of my most depressing, but also one of my best (and most sympathetic).
I recorded my Yamaha P-125 using USB audio on Audacity. The vocals were done on my Android phone.
lyrics
I was lost in a dream when I heard you
In the darkness, your light shone through
You swept me away in an infinite stream
Oh, but things were not as they seemed
Little did I know you were fighting a battle
The anxiety kicked in, your nerves rattled
One day you would smile and stand tall
The next you wouldn't leave a reply at all
Melody, where has the harmony in your life gone?
Those voices within sing their dissonant song
Melody, where is that light in your eyes?
You're breaking down under your disguise
Cradled in the arms of your lover
You're desperately trying to recover
Tears are streaming down your pretty face
Oh, you're not in a good headspace
You've left us all hanging on a string
In the choir where no one will sing
While everyone else has given in
Here we are, stuck in a tailspin
Melody, where has the harmony in your life gone?
Those voices within sing their dissonant song
Melody, where is that light in your eyes?
You're breaking down under your disguise
All of a sudden you became a ghost
Wiped the slate clean, headed for the coast
There ain't no sunshine when you're away
Looks like the darkness is here to stay
